ROCK OF AGES -FASHION FLASHBACK!!
Warm up your hair crimper and shred your jeans, because the 80's are back! At least at the Brooks Atkinson Theater on West 47th Street in New York they are! The new musical Rock of Ages has more spandex, fish nets, and Hair spray than the wardrobe truck on a Whitesnake video. In fact, David Coverdale himself dedicates the show via voice over.
If you were a fan of the Hair bands of the 80's - this show is for you. Even if you weren't - I promise you will be smiling when you hear the cover versions of artist after artist. Journey, Night Ranger, Styx, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Poison, Asia, & of course Whitesnake - are just some of the referenced hits.
American Idol finalist Constantine Maroulis heads up the cast as Drew -the small town boy who moved to LA to make it as a Rock Star. Amy Spanger is Sherrie - the girl next door who makes her way to the Sunset strip to make it in Hollywood. James Carpinello gives a stand out performance as Stacee Jax - a big haired, small brained rock star who sends pulses racing with his skin tight - white leather pants.
The show is a cross between Hedwig & the Angry Inch and the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Written by Chris D'Arienzo and directed by Kristin Hanggi - the show is non-stop action thanks to the choreography of Kelly Devine. Hats off to costume designer Gregory Gale for nailing the horror that was the 80's. Every costume will have you wincing with nostalgia! There is even a faux "lighter" handed out with your program so you can sway it above your heads during the ballads.. Did I mention there are drinks served in the theater - during the show? I told you this was not your average Broadway musical! The show has the ability to attract a crowd that does not usually ring up ticket sales for Broadway. The target audience is more concert goer than musical fan - and that is a great marketing tool! The show is a concert on speed with powerful voices hitting the back of the theater.
